How much life insurance do you need?

A straightforward calculator plus explanation of what you're adding up: income years, existing debts, education expenses, and the assets you already have set aside.

A straightforward method adds up the years of income replacement your family would need and subtracts any existing resources. Accuracy isn't critical here; life insurance amounts are purchased in increments, and the goal is simply a figure that would keep things stable during the years that matter.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Amount needed = (annual income × years of coverage needed) + any outstanding debts + education savings goals − existing savings and insurance, then round to the nearest $5,000 increment. This gives you a reasonable starting estimate only, not professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Years of support. The typical planning window is ten to twenty years of income replacement; the actual amount depends on how long your family would need that income. In Redlands, many households with young children select the longer option since schooling, childcare, and housing expenses often align during those same years.

Liabilities and loans. For most households, a mortgage represents the single largest obligation. Term life that covers this debt allows heirs to choose their own path instead of being constrained by immediate financial pressure.

Education costs. Include a reasonable per-child estimate using today's dollar values. Planning for this now is simpler than purchasing an additional policy later.

What you already own. Include accessible savings and any employer-provided coverage. Note that group policies often terminate when employment ends, so many people count only a portion of workplace coverage.

Once you determine the protection level you need, our quote tool lets you compare the monthly cost across carriers and policy durations from 10 to 30 years. Selecting coverage slightly higher than your estimate is typical; at younger ages the monthly cost increase is usually modest.
